Planning to use a virtual card for a subscription?

The first payment is only one part of a subscription. Here is what to check about the payments that follow.

Recurring payments raise questions that a one-off checkout does not. A prepaid virtual card holds only the balance you load, so the renewal date matters as much as the first payment.

Check the renewal amount and date

Many services charge a different amount at renewal than on day one. Make a note of both, and of the date.

Keep enough balance for the renewal

If the balance is lower than the renewal charge when it is attempted, the payment will be declined and the service may pause.

Check the service accepts the card

Some services do not accept prepaid cards for subscriptions. The service's own payment page is the place to confirm this before you rely on it.

Common questions

What happens if a renewal is declined?
That depends on the service. Many pause the subscription and ask for another payment method. Check the service's own terms.
